In early spring, the mountain cherry blossoms in Baxianshan Forest Recreation Area burst into full bloom, painting the park in vibrant hues. The blossoming flowers and chirping mountain birds bring the first signs of spring to the once wintry Baxianshan.

Baxianshan Forest Recreation Area is situated at the 33-kilometer mark of Provincial Highway 8 in Heping District, Taichung City, near the Guguan Hot Spring Scenic Area, making it the top spot for cherry blossom viewing in central Taiwan. The area is home to over 1,000 mountain cherry trees. Upon arriving at the visitor center, you’ll be greeted by the bright pink smiles of the cherry blossoms, while the crimson-bellied yuhina and Taiwan hwamei perched on the branches are endearing. Also known as Prunus campanulata, the mountain cherry features soft pink, mostly single-petal flowers. When in full bloom, flocks of mountain birds flock to sip nectar among the petals, creating a lively scene that draws visitors to pause and admire. This is also the best time for birdwatching in the park. After the cherry blossoms fade, their bright red fruits and fresh green leaves present another unique forest view, offering a different kind of woodland experience.

The Dongshi Forest District Office states that late January to early February is the best time to view cherry blossoms in Baxianshan Forest Recreation Area. Currently, about 50% of the blossoms have opened. Visitors are encouraged to seize the opportunity to enjoy the blooms. Additionally, during the Lunar New Year holiday period, the park will implement crowd control, with a daily visitor limit of 1,500 people—visitors are advised to avoid peak hours. From February 9 (the second day of the Lunar New Year) to 12 (the fourth day), a free shuttle bus service will be available from the toll station parking lot to the visitor center.
