In response to the rapid increase in tourists from South Korea and Taiwan, the Japanese government plans to set up a “pre-entry immigration inspection” checkpoint at Taoyuan Airport in Taiwan—an airport with a high volume of departures to Japan. Travelers can complete their immigration procedures before departing from Taiwan, so upon arrival in Japan, they only need to have their passports scanned, eliminating the need for the longer immigration inspection process. This will significantly reduce entry time. During the face-to-face verification process with immigration officers, if fingerprint checks reveal issues such as unlawful detention in Japan or other grounds for inadmissibility, travelers may be barred from boarding. If this measure proceeds smoothly, it is expected to be implemented in 2017.
