A touch of international flair has quietly settled on Bo’ai Street in Hualien City. The British Union Jack fluttering in the wind doesn’t just bring new energy to the area but also showcases cutting-edge techniques. Yes, it’s none other than the British import that has taken root here – the British Gentleman Barbershop – Cutting Edge Barber Shop!

Peek inside and you’ll spot a handsome British man giving someone a shave and grooming. That’s right – embodying the classic spirit of British gentility, the shop owner Mr. Daniel Bullivant is a true British gentleman who has traveled the world, taking his tools along with him. But when he arrived in Hualien, the beautiful mountains and waters captivated him, and he even had a rather romantic encounter with his now-wife.
Having observed Taiwan’s barber scene for some time, Daniel noticed that although hair salons are everywhere, most cater primarily to women, with only a few offering family-friendly services or budget-friendly options under NT$100. As a result, a men-focused British Gentleman Barbershop was born in Hualien – no complicated blow-drying or styling, just expert grooming tailored for every man under Daniel’s skilled hands.
Leaning against the wall is the barbershop owner Daniel’s diploma from his barber training course. (Photo provided by –SanjiNoir– Black Samurai Reads –)
Hailing from the English Midlands, he entered the profession in his teens. Years of experience and training have made him adept at making the scissors his passport around the world. This diploma not only represents his professionalism but also brings with it barbering techniques that have traveled all the way from Europe. Beyond offering haircutting styles not commonly seen in Taiwan, Daniel also provides a barbershop service that’s becoming increasingly rare here – the “British shave.”
We’ve specially invited Daniel to demonstrate the signature technique of the British Gentleman Barbershop – the legendary authentic British shave!

With facial hair growing all the way down to his Adam’s apple, Beard Guy No. 1 says it’s quite a hassle in daily life – he needs to shave twice a day just to maintain it, and getting a really clean shave isn’t easy. Sometimes excessive shaving can even cause skin redness.
But of course, for an experienced barber like Daniel, even the thickest beard is no challenge. Just give him 1.5 hours, and the British Gentleman Barbershop will turn you into a true Kingsman gentleman!
