In June 2014, the Oigawa Railway in Shizuoka Prefecture launched Asia’s first “Thomas the Tank Engine” steam train, attracting numerous tourists, rail enthusiasts, and fans of Thomas to come and experience this iconic ride. The seats were in extremely high demand. In 2016, the Thomas train returned on June 11 and was scheduled to run until October 10, with a total of 174 services available. Reservations opened as early as March.

“Thomas the Tank Engine” is a British children’s animated series that has enjoyed global fame since its television debut in 1980, known to both adults and children. From June 11 to October 10, 2016, the Oigawa Railway’s Thomas the Tank Engine steam train operated between Shin-Kanaya and Chūbu stations, with each journey lasting about 70 minutes. Passengers can enjoy the beautiful tea fields of Shizuoka along the way—an absolutely stunning view.
