Whenever the blue tears of Matsu occur, the waves crash against the shore emitting a faint blue glow—a dreamlike scene that is one of Taiwan’s most unmissable sights in spring and summer. The same season brings a similarly magical spectacle to the coast of Suruga Bay in Japan, but here the blue glow is not caused by blue tears. Instead, it comes from countless glowing firefly squid gathering together.
