The traditional streetscapes and temple scenery of Kyoto, Japan, attract thousands of travelers from around the world every year. To allow visitors to more deeply experience Kyoto’s traditional culture, the city has opened five of its temples for foreign guests to stay in. However, spending a night isn’t cheap — each spot costs 150,000 yen per person, which includes dinner and translation services.

Kyoto announced that starting in May, it will offer stays at five city temples for foreign travelers, includingEihei-in, a sub-temple of Tenryu-ji (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Daikaku-ji, Shigisan Chogosonshiji, Jakkoin, and Ryoan-ji. To help guests fully immerse themselves and find inner peace, the temple accommodations do not have TVs, only basic bedding and toiletries. In addition, guests can enjoy Japanese cultural experiences such as tea ceremonies in the courtyards, zazen meditation, and sutra lectures.
