Aso Shrine, an important national cultural property of Japan, collapsed due to damage from the strong earthquake on April 16. The news shocked and saddened many travelers who had visited the shrine; its 18-meter-high entrance gate, a significant structure, was completely destroyed. This is a rare two-story mountain gate style rarely seen in Japanese shrines and is also one of Japan’s three great shrine gates.

In addition to the gate, the pillars and walls of the shrine’s First Shrine, Second Shrine, and Third Shrine also sustained damage. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck at 1:25 a.m. Japan time on April 16 was the main quake. Numerous aftershocks with seismic intensity of 6 followed in the early hours of the 16th, causing unease. The Japan Meteorological Agency even stated that aftershocks could continue over the next week.
The Aso region reported considerable disaster damage from this earthquake, with power supply and the Shinkansen (bullet train) service both affected. Those planning to travel to Kyushu in the near future are advised to confirm whether conditions are safe and appropriate before departure.
