Summer Exclusive: Kyoto’s Uji “Hydrangea Temple” – Admire a Dreamy Sea of Blooms Amidst the Aroma of Matcha

In the peak of summer in Japan, apart from enjoying the lush greenery, it is also the season to admire hydrangeas. At Kyoto’s “Hydrangea Temple,” visitors can not only enjoy tens of thousands of colorful hydrangeas, but it is said that finding a heart-shaped hydrangea can lead to love fulfillment. Visits are open from today until July 10.

The official name of the Hydrangea Temple is Muroto-ji Temple, located in Uji, Kyoto, famous for its matcha. The temple's 5,000-tsubo garden is home to approximately 50 varieties and over 10,000 hydrangea plants. When the flowering season arrives, the vibrant colors bring the ancient temple to life, earning it the nickname “Hydrangea Temple.” It is also a representative hydrangea attraction in the Kansai region.

Within the sea of hydrangeas at Muroto-ji Temple, heart-shaped hydrangeas have been spotted by visitors here and there since around five years ago, in shades of pink and purple. According to the temple, these heart-shaped blooms are not a specially cultivated variety but rather a natural formation of the flowers, becoming the most delightful surprise in the floral landscape.

There is also a legend at Muroto-ji Temple: if you find a heart-shaped hydrangea and take a photo to set as your phone wallpaper, it will bring you love fulfillment. Though just a legend, the beautiful hydrangea gardens attract not only tourists but also many couples from both Japan and abroad who choose to take their wedding photos here, making it a popular summer destination in the Uji area.
