Following the reopening of the century-old Taichung City Hall to the public on February 27, 2016, Taichung Prefectural Hall (formerly the Taichung City Government) had its urban renewal project (originally planned as a heritage hotel) canceled after Mayor Lin Chia-lung took office, with further plans to develop it into the Taichung City Museum.

After securing a central government subsidy of NT$360 million, the Taichung City Government plans to incorporate the surrounding Daiton Branch Office and other historical buildings into the development, establishing a unique cultural and historical district for the Taichung City Museum. In conjunction with plans from the Taichung Cultural Heritage Bureau and the Urban Development Bureau—including creative shops, the Green Rail Corridor project, and bike paths—the city’s cultural and leisure map will feature even more distinctive attractions.

Taichung Prefectural Hall

Constructed in 1913 (the second year of the Taisho era), Taichung Prefectural Hall was designed by Moriyama Matsunosuke. The first phase of construction was completed in 1918, and after four expansion projects, it was finished in 1938. After 1945, it became the site of the Taichung City Government. In 2010, the Taichung City Government offices moved to the newly built municipal building. After the failure of both the urban renewal plan and subsequent commercial development efforts, the site was reimagined as the Taichung City Museum.
