Japan Airlines stated that using Doraemon as the theme character for this campaign aims to bring Chinese consumers closer to Japan Airlines and even to Japan as a whole, thereby adding more vibrancy to its China routes. Additionally, through this themed promotion, Japan Airlines hopes to boost visitor numbers during peak travel periods to Japan such as National Day and Chinese New Year by engaging in diverse interactions with Chinese consumers.

The special Doraemon livery plane made its maiden flight on September 22, entering service on routes such as Tokyo Narita–Shanghai Pudong. This is the first Doraemon special livery aircraft to fly an international route, using a Boeing 767-300 model. The exterior fuselage features spray-painting technology that perfectly captures Doraemon’s “cute charm,” and the cabin will also distribute special paper cups and original postcards featuring Doraemon designs. These special paper cups and original postcards are also available on China routes outside the Doraemon livery plane routes (except the Hong Kong route). The Doraemon special livery plane is expected to operate until March 2017, with related merchandise also being distributed on other domestic China routes.

At the end of September 2016, Japan Airlines held a physical experience event in Shanghai, showcasing the new SKY WIDER economy class seats used on the Shanghai route and a model of the livery plane. Visitors could not only experience the service of Chinese cabin crew and the feel of a real aircraft cabin, but also receive Doraemon-themed souvenirs. In addition, this event was also held in Beijing in October.
