Typhoon Megi (international name: MEGI), No. 17, has officially formed. It is currently a mild typhoon, with its center located at 16.3°N, 139.2°E, moving west-northwest at a speed of 21 kilometers per hour. The typhoon’s central pressure is 998 hPa, with maximum near-center wind speeds of 18 meters per second and maximum instantaneous gusts of 25 meters per second. The radius of the area affected by winds of force 7 or above is 100 kilometers. A sea warning could be issued as early as the afternoon of Monday, September 26, with a land warning possibly following late Monday or on Tuesday. Megi is expected to reach at least moderate typhoon strength, with some estimates placing it among the top three strongest typhoons of the year, so precautions must be taken.

By September 24, Typhoon Megi had intensified into a moderate typhoon and continues to grow stronger, with its forward speed also increasing. A sea warning is expected to be issued by the late evening of September 25, and a land warning may follow on September 26. The entire country needs to be on high alert, and maritime and hiking activities should be avoided.

Its path may take it to landfall in southeastern Taiwan, subsequently affecting the entire country, with the greatest impact expected around the 27th. Next week, September 28 happens to be a holiday. Those with travel plans should pay attention to the typhoon’s movements. Rain is expected in northern, eastern, and Kaohsiung areas this weekend, and the likelihood of rainfall across Taiwan will significantly increase over the coming week. It is also worth monitoring whether Typhoon Megi, after traveling across the Pacific and absorbing moisture and heat, will develop into an even stronger typhoon.
