Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, is one of Kyushu's well-known attractions. At 1:46 a.m. on October 8, the first crater of Nakadake, the central cone of Mount Aso, erupted, sending volcanic fire into the air. The Japan Meteorological Agency observed a volcanic smoke column as high as 11,000 meters. This was the largest-scale volcanic eruption since 1980, with a massive amount of ash covering an area with a radius of 10,000 meters. The volcanic alert level has been set to three.

Kusahiri, a famous nearby attraction to Mount Aso located just 2.8 kilometers from the crater, has yet to confirm whether it will remain open to visitors following the eruption.
