As 2017 approaches, one of the annual highlights — the Taipei 101 fireworks show — has always been a major event for New Year’s Eve celebrations, and many people have already started discussing their plans for the night. However, this year’s fireworks show might be cancelled, as the NT$45 million budget for the event has still not been secured. As a result, a spokesperson for Taipei 101 confirmed that the board of directors has discussed canceling the show for the first time.

In 2016, the New Year’s Eve fireworks show was traditionally sponsored by a single corporate sponsor, but this year, due to the legal issues involving the sponsor, Hsin Chi Technology’s CEO Xu Santai, who was embroiled in a fraud case, the funds must now be raised from businesses around Xinyi District, at a much higher cost.

However, they still hope the government can provide funding support; otherwise, hotels and restaurants in the Xinyi business district could lose out on the NT$1 billion worth of business opportunities generated by the New Year’s Eve fireworks.
