The annual "Loy Krathong Festival" has always been one of the most important celebrations in Southeast Asia and a major event that draws international tourist attention, attracting large crowds of visitors every year. Although recently, due to the passing of the Thai King, the entire nation is observing the national mourning period for King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Thai government has considered the livelihoods of its people. In addition to reopening tourism and entertainment industries, the "2016 Loy Krathong Festival (Loi Krathong)" will proceed as scheduled.

The Loy Krathong Festival is centered around four major cities: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, and Tak. In honor of the late King, the event will be held with solemnity and grandeur. In Chiang Mai, the words "I Love My King" will be formed with candles. The Ministry of Culture’s Cultural Promotion Department and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration are hosting Loy Krathong-themed events, inviting the public to participate. During the event, there will be an 89-second moment of silence, followed by a collective singing of the "Song of the King" in tribute to the late monarch.

Furthermore, Tak Province will organize the "9999 Loy Krathong Lanterns in Honor of King Bhumibol" event along the Ping River, where glowing krathongs made from coconut shells will be lined up in a row on the water.
