Tamsui Tianyuan Temple is a highly popular cherry blossom viewing spot in northern Taiwan. Especially when five to six hundred Yoshino cherry trees are in full bloom, the overwhelming number of visitors highlights its immense popularity. Among them, the Cherry Blossom King located beside the Temple’s Altar is a must-see for tourists and a favorite subject for photographers, but unfortunately, news broke before next spring that the Cherry Blossom King has died, leaving many cherry blossom enthusiasts disappointed.

The Cherry Blossom King fell ill around August or September, its leaves turned yellow and fell off. It was confirmed that the roots had rotted and could not be saved, so it had to be uprooted. The temple plans to begin replanting in December. If the new tree grows successfully, it is estimated that it will take three to five years to restore the scenic beauty the Cherry Blossom King once provided.
