Take the shot even if it’s life-threatening – make a pilgrimage to Iceland’s breathtaking Goðafoss Waterfall

Waterfalls have always been a must-visit attraction for travelers in Iceland. With various terrains, colors, and heights, they’re scattered across every corner of the country. Among them, Goðafoss, revered as a pilgrimage site by many, is an absolute must-see.

The origin of the name Goðafoss isn’t rooted in any mythological story. Around the year 1000, after the Icelandic parliament deliberated under the meditation of a law speaker, Christianity was declared the official religion. The statues of Norse gods were then thrown into the waterfall, which thereafter became known as “Goðafoss” (Waterfall of the Gods).

Located in northern Iceland, Goðafoss is easy to find, situated between Akureyri — the largest city in northern Iceland — and the world-renowned Mývatn. It can be easily reached along Iceland’s Ring Road 1.

Goðafoss is about 30 meters wide and roughly 14 meters high. Although it may not be as grand in scale as Gullfoss or Skógafoss, its water volume and width are just as impressive as other Icelandic waterfalls. Coupled with its accessible location and the backdrop of historical legend, it has become one of Iceland’s most popular attractions.

If you’re driving around Iceland, you’re bound to pass by Goðafoss. On a day with good weather, consider stocking up on some food and having a picnic near the falls to fully soak in Iceland’s natural splendor.
