As 2016 draws to a close, many people have already planned where to celebrate the new year, while some are starting to prepare for welcoming the first light of the new year. The Central Weather Bureau has published the 2017 New Year’s Day sunrise timetable as well as the 2016 sunset schedule for public reference, so everyone can plan their trips early.

This year, the last sunset on Taiwan proper will take place at Guanshan in Pingtung, Sizihwan in Kaohsiung, and Anping in Tainan at 5:25 PM, where the public can enjoy the year’s final sunset. To welcome 2017, another wave of first light chasing will rise across Taiwan. The earliest sunrise on Taiwan is at Dongqing in Orchid Island at 6:33 AM, while the earliest on Taiwan proper is at Longkeng in Kenting at 6:35 AM. Since actual sunrise times may vary due to atmospheric conditions or location-specific refraction, the public is advised to arrive at these spots 10 minutes early to get ready.
