The lively Taipei Lantern Festival was held in Ximending from February 4 to February 12. After Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je led the initial wave of promotion, another major push followed as Jiang Hongjie officially became the spokesperson for the 2017 Taipei Lantern Festival. The soon-to-be-married Universiade athlete Jiang Hongjie took time out to film the second promotional video for the Taipei Lantern Festival. Although he had previously starred in a commercial with Ai Fukuhara in Japan, this was his first time taking the lead solo—acting entirely on his own for the campaign.

Jiang Hongjie’s international table tennis romance with Japanese player Ai Fukuhara has steadily gained popularity, making them new idols in both Taiwan and Japan. This time, representing the Taipei Lantern Festival marks his first endorsement for a major event. Speaking of table tennis, Jiang Hongjie had just secured his spot on the national team a few days prior despite an injury—his final chance to compete in the World University Games, which just happens to be the one being held in Taipei this July.

The theme of the 2017 Taipei Lantern Festival is “Westside Story, Taipei Glory.” Various themed lantern zones are set up along the stretch from Beimen to Section 1 of Zhonghua Road, including a “Universiade Interactive Zone” featuring various interactive lights related to the Universiade, engaging audiences to learn more about the event.

Additionally, there will be light projection shows showcasing the charm of the old city at Beimen and Zhongshan Hall. The highlight will be the main performance area around Ximen Metro Station, which this year presents the character of the Ximen street block through the concept of street theater. Both the opening and closing ceremonies will be held here, creating a cross-genre spectacle that blends urban aesthetics with audiovisual art.
