The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival in New Taipei City, with a century-long history, is a festive event held to celebrate the Lantern Festival. Each year around the Lantern Festival, it attracts over 100,000 visitors to join in the celebration, with thousands of sky lanterns rising into the night sky, carrying everyone’s wishes to the heavens, as brilliant red lights adorn the sky in a dazzling spectacle. The first major event of the 2017 New Taipei City Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival will take place on February 11th, the Lantern Festival, while another sky lantern event is scheduled for October 4th, the Mid-Autumn Festival. The promotional period has been specially extended, incorporating local business district marketing to expand the tourism benefits.

The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival was voted by international travel channel Discovery in 2008 as the world’s second-largest festival carnival, selected by American CNN in 2013 as one of the 52 most worthwhile annual experiences in the world, listed by the world’s largest travel publisher Fodor's as one of the 14 classic festivals around the globe that one must experience in a lifetime, and recommended by National Geographic in 2016 as one of the top ten best winter travel destinations globally. This shows that Taiwan’s Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival has long been an internationally renowned festive event, beloved by friends abroad.

On the day of the Lantern Festival event, free sky lantern release vouchers will be provided, starting to be distributed at the event site from 10:00 AM on the day of the event. In addition to the sky lantern activities, the Pingxi business district also holds a series of special events, including the Pingxi–Jingtong Sky Lantern One-Stop Activity on 2/4 (Sat) and 2/5 (Sun), with lantern releases at 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM on the event days, featuring two waves of 88 lanterns flying simultaneously along the Pingxi and Jingtong areas.
