The Alishan Forest Railway, established in the first year of the Republic of China, underwent years of restoration following Typhoon Morakot. It was originally scheduled to reopen fully in December 2015 (Year 104 in Taiwan’s calendar), but was severely damaged again by Typhoon Dujuan, causing another disruption. Currently, the main line of Alishan only operates up to Fenchihu Station. Visitors wishing to go to Alishan Forest Recreation Area need to transfer to a bus on their own.

After taking the forest train to Fenchihu Station, passengers can transfer to a bus with seat reservation to reach Alishan Forest Recreation Area. Starting March 1, 2017 (Year 106), a combined rail-road ticket between Chiayi and Alishan has been jointly launched. Chiayi Bus Management Office provides two buses that pass through Fenchihu and head to Alishan, each reserving 10 seats. Travelers can book the Chiayi to Fenchihu train ticket via the Alishan Forest Railway online booking system, then reserve the Fenchihu to Alishan bus seat by phone, using this rail-road combined transport method to reach their destination.
