A Century-Old Station Reopens as an 80-Year-Old Steam Train Chugs Back to Life

Shanjia Station, located in Shulin District, New Taipei City, was first opened in Meiji 36 (1903) during the Japanese colonial era and boasts a long history. Over time, the station became too small for operational demands, and other factors such as safety concerns led to the construction of a new overpass and station building, which opened in 2011. The old station, meanwhile, was listed as a candidate for New Taipei City’s municipal heritage site. Taiwan Railways and the New Taipei City Government later joined forces to preserve this historic station. After more than a year of restoration, it reopened on February 18. The 80-year-old CK124 steam train also returned to service, carrying hundreds of rail enthusiasts from Shulin Station to Shanjia for the reopening ceremony. Following the restoration, Shanjia Station has integrated local features such as Shulin tourism, culture, the old street, and the former site of the Kuantan Coal Mine, becoming a new highlight for cultural tourism.
