The Alishan Cherry Blossom Season officially began on March 10 and will run through April 10. In tandem with the blossom season at Alishan Forest Recreation Area, besides conducting traffic controls on holidays, the Alishan Forest Railway’s Zhaoping Line will also operate steam locomotives paired with four cypress wood carriages on specified runs during the opening day of the season on March 10 and on Wednesday mornings throughout the season. Currently, the Yoshino cherry blossom “King” in Alishan is still mostly in bud with only a few blooms open; full bloom is expected about a week later. The best viewing period will likely be in late March, and there’s also a chance to see the Yoshino cherries in full splendor during the Qingming holiday. Meanwhile, the highly popular “Little Cherry King” Prunus serrulata ‘Kanzan’ is now around 80% in bloom, nearly at full flower — making it a great time for blossom viewing, with the floral display expected to last about a week.
