Taiwan boasts world-class natural landscapes, and its rich scenic beauty has led international tourists and media to call it a beautiful island. The dramatic gradient of seawater colors, aside from Italy’s Blue Hole, can also be seen in the Yin-Yang Sea located north of the Shuishe Cave settlement in Ruifang District, New Taipei. The Yin-Yang Sea is a unique geographical feature of the northeastern coastal area, where the yellowish-brown seawater in the bay contrasts sharply with the deep blue of the open sea.

Due to the region’s unique geology, the rock layers in Jinguashi contain large amounts of pyrite. Combined with the rainy climate of the northeastern region, abundant rainfall seeps into the ore, coating it with iron hydroxide and turning it yellowish-brown. The mineral-rich water then flows into the sea, where the high concentration of iron hydroxide floats on the surface. The bay’s seawater does not disperse easily, eventually creating the unique landscape of the Yin-Yang Sea.
