Hong Kong flight tickets are getting more expensive！Airport to charge construction fee starting August—up to an additional HK$760 per person

Starting August 1, Hong Kong International Airport will begin charging an airport construction fee for departing, transiting, and connecting passengers. The fee will range from HK$70 to HK$180 (approximately NT$295 to NT$760) per passenger, depending on the route and cabin class.

According to information on the Hong Kong International Airport’s official website, this airport construction fee is intended to fund the expansion project of the Three-Runway System. The fee structure will be based on flight distance, ticket class, and passenger category (departing or transiting/connecting).

For departing passengers, the fee will be HK$90 for those in short-haul economy class, and HK$160 for those in short-haul first/business class. For long-haul passengers, economy class travelers will pay HK$160, while first/business class passengers will pay HK$180. Additionally, passengers transiting/connecting in short-haul economy class will be charged HK$70. It is estimated that around 70% of passengers departing from Hong Kong International Airport will pay HK$90 or less in airport construction fees. Tickets issued before August 1, 2016, will be exempt from the fee.

Cathay Pacific has stated that the airport construction fee will becollected with the ticket. For a direct Hong Kong round-trip in economy class, the fee will be HK$90 per person; for a round-trip from Taiwan via Hong Kong to Europe in economy class, it will be HK$160 + HK$70 per person.The Hong Kong Airport website also stated that the Airport Authority will collect the airport construction fee until all loans related to the Three-Runway System project are fully repaid, and the fee rates will remain unchanged throughout the entire charging period. The initial land reclamation work for the Three-Runway System is scheduled to commence on August 1.

Short-haul: All destinations other than long-haul ones
