Located in Shimen District on Taiwan’s northern coast, the Laomei Green Algae Stones are a one-of-a-kind natural attraction. Every April to May, a vast expanse of green algae forms here, drawing many tourists and photography enthusiasts. However, this year, affected by extreme climate conditions, about half of the area turned green as early as the beginning of the year. The green algae stones, which usually remain lush throughout spring, have recently started to whiten rapidly under the scorching sun — nearly a month earlier than in previous years.

In the near future, large tides and seasonal winds will be needed to wash away the dead sea lettuce for the greenery to possibly return soon. However, if the high temperatures persist, this natural wonder may not be seen again until next year.
