One of the most highly anticipated summer events of the year – the Taiwan International Hot Air Balloon Festival – will begin in Taitung on June 30. Given the overwhelming response to last year’s hot air balloon light music concert when it was held for the first time in Kaohsiung, Taitung County Government announced that a pop-up event will be held on Saturday, June 3, at Taipei Liberty Square – the Plaza of the National Theater and Concert Hall – featuring a Taipei Hot Air Balloon Light Music Concert. This allows visitors in Taipei to enjoy the spectacle early.

In addition to enjoying various uniquely shaped hot air balloons and experiencing tethered rides and aerial flights, the light music concert is one of the highlights of the Taiwan International Hot Air Balloon Festival. The hot air balloon light music concert uses fire from the balloons – a feature previously exclusive to Taitung. Since last year’s event in Kaohsiung received rave reviews, it has been decided that on June 3, eight hot air balloons will be brought to Liberty Square for a one-night-only light music concert, inviting Taipei visitors to dance with the balloons.

Since 2015, the hot air balloon light music concert has evolved from weekly shows to a touring performance, with each edition presenting new challenges. This year’s first event will be held at Taipei Liberty Square, while in Taitung, hot air balloons will again bring joy to various townships. Last year, Typhoon Nepartak prevented the show from taking place at Sanxiantai; this year, the challenge returns to “Sanxiantai in Chenggong Township,” with the backdrop of the eight-arch coastal bridge providing the perfect setting for a spectacular sunrise light show. The grand finale light show will return to the birthplace of hot air ballooning – Luye Gaotai – hosting the closing light music concert with the theme “Let’s Go Home,” recreating the touching moments of performing under the starry sky and moonlight, accompanied by dazzling fireworks.
