Located in Fongshan District, Kaohsiung, the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) not only serves as a venue for professional domestic and international artistic performances but also plays a key role in nurturing national aesthetic appreciation. The latest opening schedule for the Weiwuying National Arts and Cultural Center has been released. Yesterday, Acting Artistic Director Chien Wen-pin stated that the Ministry of Culture has scheduled completion by October this year, followed by acceptance inspections, optimization, and trial operations, with an official opening planned for October 2018.

The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts includes four indoor performance venues: the Opera House, Concert Hall, Playhouse, and Recital Hall, an outdoor theater, as well as public facilities such as an open-air plaza, restaurants, cultural arts shops, a multifunctional hall, a rooftop observation deck, and parking lots.

Representatives from the Weiwuying Arts and Cultural Center Preparatory Office, responsible for the hardware engineering, stated that while the exterior of Weiwuying is largely complete, interior fittings are still underway. Aside from meeting the Minister’s requirements for “on quality,” “on specification,” and now also “on schedule,” they aim to meet public expectations.

The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts is not just a new landmark for Kaohsiung, but also Taiwan’s largest arts and culture venue, and the largest single-theater architectural structure in all of Asia. On April 13, 2018, the Taipei Representative Office in the U.K. (ROC) and Weiwuying held an international media and cultural sector meet-up in London, announcing the official October 2018 opening.
