Built in 1935 and known as the birthplace of Taiwan’s trains, the Taipei Railway Workshop was designated as a national historic site in its entirety in 2015, and efforts to rescue and restore it began. A six-year restoration project for the workshop commenced, and from July 19, it started accepting guided tour reservations from tourist groups. The announcement immediately caused a surge in interest,also marking the first instance of a restored national historic site in Taiwan. The guided tours are led by retired employees of the Taipei Railway Workshop,taking visitors to witness the restoration of a national historic site.

The Taipei Railway Workshop retains the original site from its establishment in 1935 and the additions made during the 1950s. In addition to seeing the history of railway technology development — including steam locomotives, diesel-electric locomotives, and railway electrification — visitors can also see the Roman-style grand bathhouse, as well as the “British Lady” self-propelled train, formerly known as the “Pride of Taiwan.”

The Taipei Railway Workshop is the largest national historic site in Taiwan’s history. During the six-year restoration period, the first phase involved the planning, design, and restoration of the culturally rich General Office and staff bathhouse; the second phase focused on the restoration of cultural assets in the Power Room, Diesel Workshop, and Forge Workshop; the third phase included the Assembly Workshop and projects related to research, collection, and exhibition needed for museum setup.
