MUJI Launches Its First Fruit and Vegetable Market – A New Hipster Pilgrimage Spot

The Japanese brand “MUJI” has seemingly become synonymous with quality living, with its minimalist and fresh style winning widespread acclaim. Following the launch of its health- and balance-focused “Café&Meal MUJI” restaurant, the brand recently announced that it will open its first-ever “fruit and vegetable market” as part of an expansion at its flagship store in Tokyo’s Yurakucho district.

MUJI’s flagship store in Tokyo’s Yurakucho district will sell basic vegetables and fruits on the first floor in a grocery-style layout, along with an actual model of the “MUJI House.” The vegetables are sold directly from producers, with a focus on those grown without synthetic chemical pesticides or fertilizers—or with reduced chemical use—sourced from both individual producers and farming groups. Rare varieties such as traditional Tokyo vegetables will also be available as special offerings.

Each product will be accompanied by information about the producer’s philosophy and seasonal serving suggestions. Other offerings include seasonal fruits, seasonings suited to vegetables, and desserts made with vegetables—around 300 carefully selected grocery items in total will be on sale.

Previously, when MUJI launched the MUJI House, its simple design and fully equipped functionality sparked widespread discussion. This time, to offer urban dwellers a taste of “life inside the house,” MUJI will set up an actual model of the MUJI House alongside the reopening of the expanded first floor of its Yurakucho store. Inside, dedicated MUJI interior design consultants will be on hand to answer customers’ questions about the house.
