On regular days, people with limited means would ask pork vendors for leftover scraps, such as diced meat and pork skin. The Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Department of Commerce called on braised pork rice vendors across Taiwan to participate in the “2017 Taiwan Braised Pork Rice Festival.” After a two-month selection process, including preliminary rounds, on-site inspections, and final judging, 78 must-try braised pork rice shops were chosen nationwide—ranging from internationally renowned, hotel-grade, longest-waiting-line, to century-old iconic establishments. Through follow-up promotional events, the goal is to make this classic Taiwanese dish famous worldwide and let global travelers fall in love with this richly Taiwanese-flavored delicacy.

Starting in September, the “Braised Pork Rice Tour Train” will continue to travel to New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung, spreading Taiwan’s most delicious braised pork rice to cities and alleys alike. In addition to sampling the free food at the event, participants can snap a photo, check in, and post it online for a chance to win event gifts and a free spot on a food mini-tour, allowing them to explore the city and enjoy a full meal.
