As autumn gradually sets in, travelers can start planning their seasonal getaways. Here are three forest trails on the outskirts of New Taipei City: the Fish and Fern Trail at Jinguiliao in Pinglin, the Lengjiaoliao Mountain Trail in Wanggu, and the Dongshige Ancient Trail in Pingxi. These three spots have recently been featured in international travel sections.

1. Pinglin – Jinguiliao Fish and Fern Trail
The Fish and Fern Trail in Jinguiliao, Pinglin, is a well-known green leisure route in the area. Visitors can stroll along the Jinguiliao Stream to enjoy the stream scenery and fern ecology. The trail boasts rich plant life, including bamboo, cedar, ferns, and wild ginger flowers. Interpretive signs are also placed along the way, making it an educational and fun hike for families.

2. Pingxi Wanggu – Lengjiaoliao Mountain Trail

The Lengjiaoliao Mountain hiking trail features diverse natural vegetation such as acacia trees, camellia trees, and snake root herbs. Along the way, you’ll pass by the “Three Treasures of Lengjiao” (the Tsai Family Western-style House, Wanggu Waterfall, and Lengjiao Ancient Bridge), where you can admire the beauty of Wanggu Waterfall up close. It’s one of the rare hidden natural paradises within the city.

3. Pingxi – Dongshige Ancient Trail
The Dongshige Crossing Trail is an ancient path once used by residents of Pingxi and Dongshige. Stretching 3.4 kilometers in total, the first section passes by remnants from the area’s coal mining heyday, while the latter part mostly follows a tributary of the Dongshige Stream. Along the way, you can enjoy pristine natural landscapes, including the lush terraced fields in front of Farmhouse No. 13 in Dongshige, offering excellent views.
