Traveling abroad often comes with unexpected situations, but thorough preparation can bring extra peace of mind. The last things you want during a flight are symptoms like motion sickness or fatigue—especially on long-haul journeys, which can be particularly unbearable. However, these discomforts can actually be alleviated through diet. Below are four dietary methods that can help reduce discomfort.

1. Avoid overeating or flying on an empty stomach

After takeoff, your body produces a lot of gas. Eating too much can strain your system, leading to nausea and vomiting, and the limited space on a plane makes proper digestion difficult. But also remember not to fly on an empty stomach—low blood sugar after takeoff can cause dizziness and nausea, worsening motion sickness. It’s best to eat easily digestible foods.

2. Reduce fatigue and drink plenty of water

The longer the flight, the more likely you are to experience fatigue and dehydration. Remember to stay hydrated and get enough sleep.

3. Eat ginger to prevent motion sickness, potatoes to aid digestion, and vitamin B-rich foods to relieve stress

Besides taking medication to ease motion sickness, try eating ginger slices or ginger candy—they can be very effective. You can also eat more digestion-friendly foods and supplement with vitamins to reduce anxiety.

4. Avoid foods high in coarse fiber, carbonated drinks, high-fat, and high-protein foods

During flights, intestinal movement slows down. Eating high-fat, high-protein, or high-calorie foods can lead to indigestion and bloating. Carbonated drinks are also not recommended—opt for easily digestible and light foods instead.
