A tropical depression may develop into Typhoon No. 20; enhanced northeast winds trigger torrential rain alert

Affected by the enhanced northeast monsoon and the peripheral cloud system of the tropical depression, the Central Weather Bureau has issued a severe weather warning. On the 12th, there is a chance of localized heavy rain in Yilan, with chances of localized moderate to heavy rain in Keelung’s northern coast, Hualien, the Greater Taipei mountainous areas, and larger rainfall in the Hengchun Peninsula. Be cautious of sudden heavy rain, lightning, and strong gusts.

The tropical depression, with a pressure of 1000 hPa, is located at 16.5°N, 130°E, in the waters east of the Philippines, moving northwestward at 15 km/h. It has the potential to develop into a mild typhoon by the 12th at the earliest. If it forms, it will become the 20th typhoon of 2017 (to be named Khanun), and will come closest to Taiwan on Friday and Saturday.

This weekend, northern, Taipei-Keelung-New Taipei, Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung regions will mostly see overcast and rainy weather. Travelers should take note. The southern regions will have afternoon showers over the weekend, so it is advisable to carry rain gear when going out.
