Currently, drunk driving in the country is defined as:
* Article 114 of the Road Traffic Safety Rules
A blood alcohol concentration of 0.15 mg per liter or higher, or a blood alcohol content of 0.03% or higher, prohibits driving. Violators will be cited under Article 35 of the Road Traffic Management Penalty Act, fined between NT$15,000 and NT$90,000, have their vehicle impounded on the spot, and have their driver’s license suspended.
* Article 185-3 of the Criminal Code
A blood alcohol concentration of 0.25 mg per liter or higher, or a blood alcohol content of 0.05% or higher.

Punishable by up to 2 years in prison and/or a fine of up to NT$200,000. If it results in death, the penalty is 3 to 10 years in prison; if it causes serious injury, the penalty is 1 to 7 years in prison.
Reference to foreign drunk driving laws:
Japan has the highest fines and the most severe prison terms: A blood alcohol concentration of 0.15 or higher results in a fine of ¥500,000 to ¥1,000,000 and a prison term of 3 months to 5 years. If it leads to a fatal accident, the prison term is up to 20 years.
The UK has the longest license suspension: Three drunk driving offenses within 10 years result in a 109-year license suspension.
The number of deaths from drunk driving decreased from 744 in 2013 to 533 in 2016, and in 2018, there were 100 deaths and 41 injuries. Although the numbers have been declining year by year, many still take chances and drive after drinking. Many are calling for stricter penalties to deter drunk driving.
