Japan’s Inujima Student Dormitory Looks Like a “Doghouse” — How Cool Would It Be to Live Here?

Along the coast of Inujima Island in Okayama, Japan, there’s a massive 5.1-meter-long dog lying on a seaside house, resembling a giant doghouse. This is actually a student dormitory for Sanyo High School in Okayama, Japan, and the oversized canine exterior serves as the building’s main visual feature.

Located on Inujima Island in the Seto Inland Sea east of Okayama City, this small island has a population of less than 100 people. The island got its name from a rock formation at its highest point that resembles a dog. Known for its pristine scenery and artworks, Inujima attracts many visitors. This “big doghouse” is one of its most eye-catching highlights.

Officially named the “seaside house” or “white house,” this large permanent installation artwork is 5.1 meters long, 3 meters high, and 2.4 meters wide. Created by sculptor Kazuhito Kawauchi as part of an individual art project, it is primarily made of ceramic tiles, antique ceramics, and glassware, assembled using a mosaic technique. The dog’s wary gaze is directed toward the island’s giant rock “Inujima Myojin,” as a sign of respect.

According to the Okayama City Tourism Bureau, the doghouse normally functions as a research facility for Sanyo High School and also serves as a student dormitory. During certain periods, it is open to visitors, who can enjoy the view from the dog’s head. Just 400 meters from the port, the sight of the dog lying in front of the house is remarkably lifelike when viewed from the sea, making it a must-see attraction on Inujima.
