As 2017 comes to an end and we prepare to welcome 2018, many people are starting to plan their trips for the new year. With access to abundant information and great deals online and through various events, they’re gearing up to craft unique and cost-effective travel itineraries. To inspire travelers worldwide, here’s an exclusive sneak peek at the “Top 8 Travel Trends for 2018,” compiled from reviews and surveys of travelers across 26 countries.

Travel Trend No. 1: Tech Takes Over – Travel Gets Smarter
As we head into 2018, technology is playing an increasingly vital role in travel. With the development of AI and digital tech, travelers now have more comprehensive access to travel information. Nearly one-third (29%) of travelers say they would let a computer automatically arrange their upcoming trips based on past travel records, while half of all travelers said they wouldn’t mind if technology replaced human customer service — as long as their issues get resolved.

Additionally, the popularity of VR is set to soar even higher. About 65% of travelers hope to preview destinations via virtual reality before deciding to book, while half say that tech-curated destination recommendations and local highlights would entice them to travel again.

Travel Trend No. 2: Step Out of Your Comfort Zone & Check Off Bucket List Destinations
Nearly half (45%) of travelers have a “must-visit-in-a-lifetime” list, and over 85% of them hope to check off at least one item within the next year. For many, a meaningful journey holds more appeal than material possessions, and the desire for unforgettable experiences continues to drive them to explore new places.

“Visiting world wonders” is the most common item on these bucket lists, with nearly half (47%) of travelers hoping to witness iconic global landmarks in 2018. Around 35% want to embark on culinary adventures abroad, savoring authentic flavors. Other popular bucket list items include island getaways, world-famous theme parks, road trips, immersive cultural experiences, and hidden gem explorations — all frequently mentioned by Booking.com users.

Travel Trend No. 3: Revisiting Childhood Haunts
In the coming year, up to 34% of travelers hope to revisit places they loved as children, exploring them in new ways. These travelers say family trip memories are often the most cherished, and the familiarity and happiness of returning to old spots even surpass memories of childhood friends or pets.

Millennials (aged 18–34) are especially keen on such trips — over 44% plan to revisit their favorite family travel destinations in 2018. Moreover, as more travelers love sharing their lives on social media, these nostalgic spots will regain attention and attract even more visitors in 2018.

Travel Trend No. 4: Pop Culture Drives Travel Decisions
Pop culture will be a major travel influencer in 2018, with TV shows, movies, sports, and social media shaping booking decisions more than ever. For instance, recommendations from bloggers and YouTube influencers will serve as inspiration for 39% of travelers, while destinations featured in films, TV series, and music videos also hold strong appeal (36%). Over one-fifth (22%) of travelers plan trips around major sporting events — with more than 43% already planning to attend the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Additionally, hit TV series will spark travel trends in 2018, with the most popular ones being Game of Thrones (29%, driving visits to Croatia, Spain, and Iceland), Sherlock and The Crown (21% and 13% for London), Billions (13% for New York), and Entourage (10% for Los Angeles).
