When autumn and winter arrive, foliage viewing becomes one of the hottest travel topics. Aside from Japan, Taiwan also boasts beautiful spots to admire autumn leaves. Strolling along romantic red leaf trails in the midst of picturesque mountains and waters creates an atmosphere that is no less enchanting than Japan’s. Below are three recommended maple leaf destinations and routes in Taiwan, where visitors can plan a foliage-viewing trip while enjoying the cool weather.

1. Alishan Forest Recreation Area
Besides watching the sunrise, sea of clouds, and sacred trees, the stunning crimson foliage at Alishan is another must-see spectacle. Around November each year, the maple leaves here begin to turn red. One of the hidden gems, “Ogasawara Observation Deck,” offers a 360-degree panoramic view, allowing you to gaze at the sunrise over the Yushan mountain range and the spectacular sea of clouds. In the evening, you can also enjoy the sunset, sea of clouds, and afterglow.
 
Recommended route:
1. Walk from Zhuping Station along the Zhu Shan Sun Viewing Trail for about 1 hour to reach the destination; or take the Zhu Shan Line small train directly to Zhu Shan Station, then walk about 15 minutes to the right from the station exit.
2. First Control Post → Second Staff Dormitory → Fork in the Road → Alishan Hotel → Alishan Work Station.
3. The section of Alishan Highway from kilometer 76 to 93.

2. Wuling Farm

Wuling Farm is a key destination for flower viewing in Taiwan. During autumn and winter, in addition to admiring the maple leaves, visitors can also see golden ginkgo trees and romantic larch trees. The beautiful scenery is no less stunning than Japan’s. At Wuling Farm, you can also camp at wooden board campsites and log cabins. During peak flower-viewing seasons, hotels and campsites are often fully booked.
