More than just the biggest 3D light show — four highlights at the Wei Wu Ying you can’t miss

Kaohsiung’s Wei Wu Ying has recently become a new hotspot for the arts. In addition to the international landmark “National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Wei Wu Ying),” nearby attractions and events are also not to be missed. The Wei Wu Ying Arts Center hosts an arts festival as well as a 3D light show on its theater building, showcasing Kaohsiung’s international cultural side; nearby urban parks and communities also feature eye-catching installation art and street paintings. 1. Wei Wu Ying Arts Festival
The 2017 Wei Wu Ying Arts Festival brought together top Taiwanese artists and leading creators from Europe, America, and Japan, presenting some of the most explosive and imaginative artworks spanning dance, music, theater, and circus performances; international forums and everyday art workshops served as a catalyst to bring visitors closer to the arts. There was also the Autumn Tiger Music Festival, gathering original wonderful sounds from around the world, with nearly a hundred indoor and outdoor performances that allowed the energy of art to reach everyone.

2. Installation Art at Wei Wu Ying Urban Park
Transformed from a military base, Wei Wu Ying Urban Park is now a multifunctional urban park themed around humanity and the arts. The park features three large public art installations, collectively named the “Urban Concerto,” including “Enactment,” “Bugle Call,” and “Ripple of Water Light.” Each piece plays its own melody from different parts of the park, creating a harmonious symphony. The latest installation, “Bunker,” made from woven bamboo, straw, and hemp rope as interactive military props, glows like a warm, large-scale art lamp at night, illuminating the entire park.

3. Lingya Street Art Festival
The Kaohsiung City Government’s Civil Affairs Bureau and Lingya District Office held the “2017 Kaohsiung Lingya International Street Art Festival” in the Wei Wu community, inviting well-known domestic and international artists to create large-scale wall paintings, public object art, live canvas painting, street dance competitions, group performances, and food trucks at the community. This event established the country’s first large-scale mural painting area, using color to transform the city.
