With the Christmas season upon us, locations across Taiwan have begun adorning themselves with festive decorations and installing a variety of Christmas trees. Beyond New Taipei City’s light projection tree and Tainan’s bamboo-woven tree, Taichung City is set to unveil Taiwan’s very first underwater Christmas tree. In previous years, Taichung City Government has set up Christmas trees at Civic Plaza on Taiwan Boulevard and at the Fengyuan Yangming Building, along with hosting a series of events. This year, the focus shifts to the Liu River and the Yangming Building.

The “2017 Taichung Christmas Carnival Series” features a towering 9-meter underwater Christmas tree along the Liu River. Its design draws inspiration from the ever-flowing spirit of the Liu River, and is adorned with four of Taichung’s major export flowers—anthurium, gladiolus, Oncidium, and lily—to welcome the 2018 Taichung Flower Expo. Meanwhile, the Yangming Building will still host its own Christmas tree and related events.

For this year’s event series, the Liu River section will host a Christmas market from December 9 to 25, featuring both local Taiwanese and international cuisine as well as cultural creations, offering visitors a taste of two distinct styles—Taichung and Nordic. There will also be two interactive installations that use technology to let guests experience avant-garde shadow puppetry. After Christmas, the Liu River’s creative light art display will continue until March 4, 2018. The Fengyuan Yangming Building will present a series of singing, dancing, and other performances from December 23 to 25, along with street artist shows.

The Liu River waterway (from Taiwan Boulevard to Minquan Road sections) will be closed for 11 days from November 27 to December 7 to allow for the installation of Christmas lights, concert setups, and equipment maintenance. Entry will be temporarily prohibited during this period, and visitors are advised to cooperate. While the sidewalks on both sides of Liu River East and West Streets will remain open, due to the presence of large cranes, the public is urged to stay safe and avoid entering the waterway area.
