Taiwan’s Only Eco-Friendly Christmas Tree Turns Square into a Dreamy European Wonderland

The Keelung City Government has collaborated with various churches for three consecutive years to organize Christmas events. This year, they have planned the “Heavenly Child Descends, True Love in Keelung” Christmas celebration series, featuring a 21-meter-tall “Ocean Eco-Friendly Christmas Tree” made from 7,000 PET bottles. This is the only one of its kind in all of Taiwan and also the most distinctive Christmas tree, allowing citizens to enjoy the festive Christmas atmosphere while also sharing in the beauty of environmental conservation.

This year’s event incorporates environmental awareness, inviting everyone to contribute to loving the Earth. With a month-long schedule, church partners have put in great effort and care to plan a series of activities. Using minimal funding, they have created a distinctive city Christmas event in Keelung for three consecutive years. This year, they’ve also integrated local cuisine and souvenir industries, making the event both visually delightful and delicious.

The eco-friendly Christmas tree stands 21 meters tall and is constructed from 7,000 PET bottles, making it the largest eco-friendly Christmas tree in Taiwan. It will be on display from December 9 to January 2 of next year, with traditional art lanterns and 3D stereoscopic displays also exhibited on-site.

Before December 23, a series of exciting performances will also take place at Marine Plaza, featuring indigenous dance, Hakka cultural art performances, rock music nights, magic shows, and puppet shows by the Hope Book Theater Troupe. On December 23 from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm, a Christmas charity fun fair will be held at Marine Plaza, inviting citizens to join in the fun. That evening at 6:00 pm, there will also be a lively Christmas party featuring famous street performer Chen Man-Ching, who will perform an impressive drum solo live.
