After celebrating Lunar New Year, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Couples around the world will pour out into the streets, showering each other with sweetness and love—blinding all the single onlookers in the process. But if you're single and don’t want to witness these painful sights, be sure to steer clear of the following six “Shining Zones.” Take care of yourself and enjoy your own company instead.

1. Movie Theaters
Movie theaters are definitely one of the most popular spots for couples on Valentine’s Day. If you go to the cinema that day and end up sitting next to a lovey-dovey couple, it might seriously ruin your movie experience. So, singles, skip the cinema on Valentine’s Day. Instead, rent a DVD after work, cozy up on the couch at home with snacks, or invite a few fellow single friends over for a fun hangout—that could be way better.
Viewing nightscapes is also a classic date activity for couples. Spots like Yangmingshan, Xiangshan, and Maokong in Taipei are all super romantic destinations. Even outside of Valentine’s Day, you’ll often find couples enjoying the night views up in the hills. Best for singles to give those places a miss.

3. Bustling Districts
Bustling districts such as Taipei’s Xinyi District, East District, and Ximending, or Taichung’s Qianmei Greenway and Yizhong Street, are packed with restaurants and perfect for shopping and dating. On Valentine’s Day, they’ll be overflowing with couples—so be careful.
4. Popular Photo Spots
Couples love visiting spots with giant “LOVE” signs or trending Instagram photo locations to snap cute couple shots and make memories. So try to avoid those hot photo spots on Valentine’s Day—or gather a group of friends and take joyful group photos together. There's strength in numbers.

5. Riverside Areas
While riverside parks are great for solo relaxing and unwinding, on Valentine’s Day they turn into super romantic couple hotspots. For example, Kaohsiung’s Love River area holds Valentine’s events every year, filling the surroundings with lovey-dovey vibes. Better for singles to steer clear.

Parks on Valentine’s night are also gathering spots for couples. Taipei’s Da’an Forest Park, for instance, will be full of couples holding hands while strolling or sitting on benches whispering sweet nothings—it’s seriously “shiny.” Especially after dinner time, you’ll see many sweet elderly couples walking together for exercise. It’s enough to make anyone jealous.
