Update:At 21:33 and 21:56,magnitude 4 and5.8 felt earthquakesoccurred respectively, especially the one at 21:56 which had quite a long shaking duration, lasting about 8 to 10 seconds, making it distinctly felt by many. The epicenter wasabout 27 kilometers north of Hualien County Government, which is the main shock in this series of quakes; earthquake experts stated that this is a normal release of energy caused by the subduction and movement of the Philippine Plate, and aftershocks will continue throughout the week.
Update 2:Earthquakes continue to occur. At 22:10, 22:12, 22:13, and 22:16, felt earthquakeswith magnitudes between 4.3 and 5.5occurred, with epicenters also located offshore of Hualien, at depths between 5 and 10 kilometers. Seven felt earthquakes have occurred within one hour.
Update 3:At 23:33 on February 4, another magnitude 4.3 felt earthquake occurred, and at 00:54 on February 5, a magnitude 4.4 felt earthquake occurred. Between these two felt earthquakes, eight smaller regional earthquakes occurred frequently.

As a cold front hits, the Central Weather Bureau has issued special weather warnings for low temperatures, heavy rain, and strong winds. On February 4, three consecutive earthquakes occurred (Editor’s note: updated to ten), including a magnitude 4.6 earthquake at 03:30 in the early morning,and at03:31 in the early morning, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake. The epicenters of these earthquakes were all about 24 to 30 kilometers north of Hualien County Government.

The magnitude 5.1 earthquake at 21:12 in the evening was felt in both Yilan and Hualien. The intensity was 4 to 5 (Hualien), 3 (Yilan), 2 (mountainous areas of Taichung, Chiayi, and Yunlin), and 1 (Greater Taipei area).
The magnitude 5.8 earthquake had a long shaking duration, and intensities of 2 to 3 were felt in the northern regions. Both domestic and international tourists in Hualien could clearly feel the strength of the quake and were quite startled.

With frequent earthquakes, do not panic and stay calm while preparing adequately. In the near future, reduce travel to mountainous areas in eastern and central Taiwan to avoid dangers on roads due to loose and slippery soil after earthquakes and heavy rain.
When a magnitude 5 or higher earthquake occurs, the Taiwan Railways Administration needs to inspect trains and confirm there are no fallen rocks on the tracks before ensuring safety for operation. Passengers planning to take trains through eastern Taiwan should pay attention to whether trains are running normally. There are scattered rockfalls at km 163.9 on Provincial Highway 9, which is currently under single-lane traffic control. Be sure to check and pay attention to related road conditions in advance.
