The Alishan Forest Railway has now been in service for 106 years since its establishment in 1912, and it continues to be a beloved and closely watched destination for travelers from around the world, as well as a representative tourist attraction of Taiwan.

In 2003, the Alishan Forest Railway was selected as one of Taiwan’s potential World Heritage Sites. Its selection highlights include its 762mm narrow-gauge mountain railway, which incorporates four out of the world’s five major engineering techniques for mountain railways: the horseshoe curve, spiral route, zigzag, and the specially designed Shay geared steam locomotive.

Riding the Alishan Forest Railway to admire cherry blossoms, capturing the scenic beauty of cherry blossoms with trains, stargazing under the Milky Way at night, and watching the sunrise at dawn are all popular activities. The Cherry Blossom King at the Alishan Work Station is also a must-see spectacle in spring.
