Since the rise of the Industrial Revolution, the emergence of expos has been closely linked to the background of urban development. Society has a strong need to construct or share a collective consciousness. A thoughtful design expo is no longer limited to the simple trade of cultural and creative goods, but rather stimulates our taken-for-granted, conventional understanding of the world. Through the setting of specific spaces and conditions, it allows both body and mind to be inspired as they pass through it.
The 2018 Design Expo has created a new cultural concept exhibition area. In this year’s curatorial theme, it takes a step further from the prevailing societal discourse on design—“how design can improve life”—to explore “the possibilities of design creation within cultural thought pathways.” The important topic of “the body” becomes a key declaration that runs throughout the entire exhibition space.
The exhibition starts from the selfhood of the body, returning to the essence of human basic senses to find clues for creativity. Through the encompassing themes of the exhibition areas, it explores the concept of “proprioception”—an internal sense of awareness—as a starting point to reflect on and rediscover originality, aesthetics, and culture. Proprioception provides an “inner knowledge” of the body. By entering exhibition layouts such as body/nature, body/vision, body/rhythm, body/craft, body/fashion, and body/society, the experience of culture returns to a sensory experience.
