Many people love stargazing, and there are two meteor showers to enjoy soon. The Lyrids and Eta Aquariids will peak one after another at the end of April and early May. With clear weather and high visibility, it is expected that vivid and breathtaking views can be admired.

The Lyrids meteor shower occurs between April 16 and 25 each year, with this year’s peak expected at 2 a.m. on April 23, featuring up to 90 meteors per hour. The Eta Aquariids meteor shower will take place on May 6, peaking at around 50 meteors per hour. As spring transitions into summer, the clear weather and lack of light pollution will make the meteor showers clearly visible.

Although the number of meteors in the Lyrids and Eta Aquariids showers is not as high as that of major meteor showers like the Perseids or Geminids, the favorable season and excellent viewing conditions mean the Taipei City Department of Transportation anticipates many stargazers will head to the mountains. Therefore, flexible traffic controls will be implemented in the Yangmingshan area depending on actual weather and traffic conditions to prevent congestion. Travelers planning to go stargazing may take additional buses serving the Yangmingshan area and pay attention to nighttime driving safety.
