When thinking of places to admire wisteria in Japan, besides the renowned Ashikaga Flower Park, Fukuoka’s Great Kurogi Wisteria Festival is also a must-visit wisteria destination. The Great Kurogi Wisteria tree is over 600 years old and has been designated as a Japanese national natural monument, blooming every year from late April to early May.

Legend has it that the Great Kurogi Wisteria was planted in 1395 by Prince Narisue, the Later Kamakura Deputy Shogun. This wisteria, over 620 years old, has survived numerous wars and continues to grow vigorously to this day. It is now widely known across Japan as the “Longevity Wisteria.”

The Great Kurogi Wisteria, planted at Susanoo Shrine, covers a trellis area of about 3,000 square meters. It blooms around mid-April each year, and when in full bloom, it is truly spectacular, with over 1.5-meter-long purple flower clusters hanging down.
