Situated in the Sanqi Rice Field area of Dongshan Township, Yilan County, the rice paddies transform into lush green waves in May and golden fields in June as the ears ripen, hence known as “Yilan’s Version of Blooming Boulevard.” This year, to complement the rice growth period, a “Hot Air Balloon Carnival” has been introduced, adding a new highlight for fun.

This year, Dongshan Township Office has broken from tradition by introducing a hot air balloon event, allowing visitors to do more than just stroll through the paddies. Not only can guests take to the skies in hot air balloons during the day to overlook the golden waves, but there are also evening light shows featuring illuminated balloons, bringing a fresh dimension to local tourism.

The “Yilan Hot Air Balloon Carnival,” launched by the Dongshan Township Office this year, will take place on June 2, 3, 16, and 17 — four days in total with eight tethered hot air balloon flights available. Visitors can not only watch the balloons slowly ascend over the rice fields but also take flights to enjoy aerial views capturing the vast expanse of paddies.

The tethered hot air balloon sessions are divided into morning and evening slots. Morning flights are available from 6:00 to 8:00 AM, with registration opening at 5:00 AM on the day; evening flights run from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, with registration starting at 3:30 PM. Each session accommodates 140 participants, with a fee of NT$500, and all sign-ups are on-site.

In addition to the tethered balloon rides, there will also be four hot air balloon light shows in the evening. As the balloons rise among the rice waves, synchronized lighting and sound effects create an unforgettable visual spectacle. The light shows run from 6:45 to 7:00 PM and are highly anticipated.
