A tropical depression located southwest of Taiwan has made landfall in Kaohsiung. On the morning of the 15th, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced that this tropical depression had developed into this year’s sixth typhoon, Kaemi. Meanwhile, the Central Weather Administration stated that Taiwan currently still classifies it as a tropical depression, with wind strength not yet reaching typhoon levels, and therefore has not yet issued maritime or land typhoon warnings.

This tropical depression made landfall along the coast of Kaohsiung at 7:00 AM, with an indistinct center. It moved into the southwestern part of Taiwan, slightly weakening in intensity, and is moving northeastward at a speed of 15 km/h. Strong gusts of wind reaching levels 9 to 10 have already occurred in coastal areas of Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and the Hengchun Peninsula, with strong gusts still expected in southern and eastern regions during the day.

What is certain is that due to the influence of the tropical depression and its peripheral circulation, rainfall is expected across Taiwan today, especially in southern Taiwan. The weather bureau has already issued a torrential rain advisory for four counties and cities in southern Taiwan as of the 15th, a heavy rain advisory for eight counties and cities including central Taiwan, Yilan, and Hualien-Taitung, and has also warned 19 other counties and cities to prepare for strong winds.
The Personnel Office of Taitung County Government has announced that work and classes in Lanyu Township will be suspended this afternoon and evening. Currently, Lanyu is experiencing strong winds and heavy rain, making driving difficult. Tourists stranded in the area should take extra precautions. In Shiwun Village, Chunshe Township, Pingtung County, rainfall has reached 264 mm, and the access road to Shiwun Village has been blocked by falling rocks and landslides due to the heavy rain. Pingtung County Government announced tonight that work and classes in Shiwun Village, Chunshe Township, will be suspended tomorrow.
