Areas around Osaka, including Kyoto, Hyogo, and Shiga, also felt tremors reaching magnitude 5. Many travelers in Osaka reported back to say they were safe, describing the quake as terrifying — so intense that they could barely stand, with violent shaking.
Due to the earthquake, JR services in Osaka are currently suspended; 170,000 households are without electricity, and 100,000 without gas. Several flights have also been canceled.
