Recently, a surreal snowflake-like spectacle has appeared on the rivers of Wujiajia Wetland in Yilan’s Wujie Township, drawing many visitors to capture the moment with their cameras. In fact, these “snowflakes” are the summer blooms of spike-flowered terminalia, also known as water caltrop, which are currently in full bloom.

Wujiajia Wetland is located on the east side of the Dongshan River in Lizhe Village and Xiufu Village, Wujie Township, covering an area of nearly 200 hectares. Due to its low-lying terrain and year-round water accumulation, this unique ecological environment has formed vast grass marshes. The wetland is planted with water caltrop and Chinese bottle trees as boundary markers, attracting many visitors each year when the flowers are in bloom.

Also known as water caltrop, spike-flowered terminalia gets its name because its fruit resembles the legs of a Go game board. Beyond its unique name, its growth pattern is even more special—its flowers gradually unfurl in the evening and fully bloom by midnight, only for the stamens and petals to wither and fall by the next morning, making it a fleeting, dreamlike flower.

Spike-flowered terminalia is a native coastal plant of Taiwan. In Wujiajia Wetland, Wujie Township, Yilan, it blooms vibrantly every midsummer.
